Ahriman – II

Today is Sunday. I am conflicted: should I begin working on a new piece, or should I walk around the city and start the new painting tomorrow?  Mine is one of the greenest and most populated neighborhoods in the capital. In the past, I was stimulated by greenery and I had ample means to appreciate it.  Now, I am interested in the human figure and, again, I have ample means to investigate it. The continuity of the process makes me happy more than anything.  The moments in which we think we have “sufficiently” known or savored the shape of the human figure, are the fragile moments of life, when we are perhaps too young to judge or too tired to continue… In fact, I love Monday much more, both for going out and for working.  Monday attracts me because of its fresh aroma.  Every day has its peculiar aroma.  In Sunday’s air, I often feel the aroma of stale perfume!

I decide to go to my atelier. The wooden stairs of the Shijak’s buildings have, for seventy years, been enduring the humidity, the heat and the aroma of Tirana days. Today, the attic is suffused in the stale, antediluvian aroma of Sunday. Today, I am unable to escape earthly troubles… I imagine having wings!  I sit on the couch, extend my hand and open the fossils book on the “Archaeopteryx” page. “The Ancient Wing” is one of the first miracles that attempted to escape earthly troubles. Unfortunately, like all antediluvian monsters, “The Ancient Wing” could not escape the Flood either! Among the flying Reptilians, Noah chose the harmless birds that surround us today. But what does being harmless mean?

I leave “The Ancient Wing” on the pile of books on the couch and I look questioningly toward Sarah’s portrait; Sarah Vaughan sings the whole time and does not even notice me. I turn my head toward the other corner, but Ahriman looks coldly toward Sarah.  The three “Nude Amphorae” fondle, posing and conscious of their feminine sensuality, whereas the “Space” cycle focuses far away and the reaction can be eternally prolonged. Whereas the highland figures are very rough and are not concerned with the troubles of this world!  Convinced that the inhabitants of the atelier have been disoriented from Sunday’s aroma, I focus all my attention on the easel.

On the white screen of the canvass, Sunday’s imagination projects a phantasmagoria of situations, among which I have to choose the next subject.  In this Sunday’s projection, the greenery of childhood becomes yellow, it is transformed by successive social conditions, and is followed by the everyday specter of the memorized world. I look for something worthwhile in the imagination’s coil of scenarios, but the celestial nodes are too entangled. The planetary experience registered under my skull and the world memorized throughout my life, harmonize the unknown dimensions and secretly structure my imagination. The individual imagination, this marionette connected with hundreds of threads to the mysteries of the universe is very, very complicated…

The phantasmagoria of Sunday is ruled by obscurantism! The traffic of people and property, the negation of civility, the promotion of monstrous subjects!  The gods of evil are successful in mimesis, they are entangled everywhere and hurry to control in the name of law!  Bastard creations resist to all cataclysms!  A sacrifice in the name of the sun, blood-shed in the name of the people, guillotine and rope in the name of freedom!  Pharaohs and patricians, secretaries, businessmen, loads of money and starving children… This scene disgusts me, as Sunday’s aroma amplifies evil. I do not feel like working.

I begin to go down the wooden stairs and I encounter the fogginess of the shadow-personas.  This time, they appear indifferent: they go up, they go down, move in surprising ways and do not express any interest toward their surroundings. They are gray-green shadows, similar to the tiny reptilians in the gardens that amazed me when I was a child! The situation propels discomfort, even though I can easily penetrate the shadows.

I go out in the street and surprisingly I continue to encounter the shadow-personas. Some of them have scales, some of them have enlarged, pale bellies and long tails which one should try not to step on. I carefully pass by casino “Admiral”, where the green ones come and go looking for money and opportunity. A number of them look greedily toward the front corner, where the object that conjures them is the gray skeleton of a huge and abandoned dinosaur. I have heard something about the exchanges and the magic that surround this giant, cement skeleton, but I do not have a good memory on business’ mysteries. Close to the entry of my house, I am obligated to appreciate the house music coming out of the café across the street… I now understand Arkeopteriks, Daedalus and Leonardo fully: I am a part of the world of the living, and so I need a pair of wings.

The Chaldean demons of the storm are winged demons and they are called Shedu. As the stone statues of antiquity testify, “the demons of the storm” protect the entrance of the cities and the houses of the powerful. The guards must be strong and never lonely. The monuments show that there are seven good Shedu demons and that their bodies have the shape of the bull. The bull is a powerful animal. Pegasus has wings, the dragon has wings and the “demon of the storm” must have wings also.  Wings originate from the reptile class and they are empowered from modern gods. With the help of wings one can flee from earthly troubles, one can challenge the sky and emerge triumphant from the powers of the dark… But the powers of the dark become evermore mysterious!

In the stream of the last one hundred years, the pantheon of Earth’s scientists resounds as never before from debate and discontent. The clever discoveries and the “genial gaffes” of the modern gods, represent a universe that the more it offers, the more it hides for tomorrow. The Aristotelian “Horror Vacui” intrigues Einstein and the “vacuous space” is suddenly filled by the sudden mystery of “dark energy”. A “vacuous space” does not, however mean “nothingness”!  Seventy percent of the universe’s mass-energy now implies the energy of vacuum, the living vacuum or the demonic force that is univocally baptized “Dark Energy”… But what does “dark energy” mean?

The realm of the unknown is overwhelmingly greater than the realm of the known. Like never before, the modern gods accept their modest positioning in comprehending the universe. Human beings feel rich and ancient, and yet what has been attained is only the beginning!  In the halo of the galactic core, the modern gods discern “the globular cluster”, which, like live celestial fossils, uncover the age of the universe, shaking up the pantheon of scholars. Until now, they have sailed in a space of at least thirteen billion year old which produces only question marks. The universe becomes evermore mysterious and its expansion evermore quick. The age and the movement of the cosmos appear as a common heresy, for which something or someone must be responsible. Like never before, the modern gods sharpen their senses in search of the “demonic force”.

*

According to ancient beliefs, the demonic force is a divine entity. In the Homeric verses, gods and demons were one and the same and the terms used to refer to them were used interchangeably. Plutarch coveys the ancient and original idea where, in the hierarchy of personalities, the spirit could initially be a hero, then a demon and then a most sublime subject. In other cases, the ancient demons are regarded as ex-deities which mediate between gods and humans… The negative connotation attributed to the demonic force dates late and malign demons are, for the first time, defined by the writers of the New Testament. Those possessed by demonic forces are thereafter regarded as subjects incapable of human will and they are regarded as mentally ill toward whom exorcism and psychotherapy are the only ways to salvation. Devoted shepherds convince humanity that the demonic force is a malign force and that demons are the source of all evil. The demonic subjects no longer alternate between noble and plebian ones; they could appear embodied or disembodied, they could get masked in the garb of the fire, the air and the earth, but in every case they are evil. The destruction of Jerusalem, the fall of Rome, the French revolution and the world conflicts, are considered by many as results of demonic intensity… Nevertheless, the depths of the planetary experience from where human imagination springs, are quite mysterious; devout civilization is far too young and humankind far too disobedient toward the good shepherds.  The works of art uncover in the four corners of the globe the uncommon imagination which models the most important figures. Lucifer is imagined as human and superhuman, with or without wings, with or without horns, sometimes monstrous and sometimes handsome and peaceful. Godly and demonic forces, are separated in all possible forms in order to be investigated in all possible forms. The heavenly conflict thus offers the proper dough for folk intuition, which cooks the drama of personality through eminent figures such as Lucifer “the light bearer”.

Ancient monuments are visited more and more from modern believers. All the forces that are deemed “heavenly,” “demonic” or “dark,” are perceived the stone statues. But for modern believers perception is not sufficient. The Heavenly and the Demonic descend on Earth as Virtue and Monstrosity, they are powerfully combined within human cells to generate Alexander, Cesar, Napoleon.  But modern believers are not satisfied with Earth.  They resemble concentrated and meditating yogis, who have been attempting for thousands of years to awaken the mysterious force of “Kundalini”. “Dark Energy” is only the current title! They search for quintessence, they search for the crux of an universe that knows to sleep and wake up, to be born and reborn as every breathing individual between the earth and the sky. Like the stars in space, drowned in universal the consciousness that penetrates every human being, the modern believers listen to the oracles and enlighten themselves. The fogs dissipate, the universe expands hurryingly, and so do human beings along with it… But modern believers do not stop at knowing only their own selves.
